In a strategic reevaluation, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is contemplating a significant shift in plans, considering the relocation of Male' Commercial Harbour back to its originally intended location on Thilafushi Island. This potential move comes after previous attempts to relocate the harbor faced stagnation and alterations.

The initiative to relocate the bustling commercial harbor away from Male' has been a recurring objective across successive governmental administrations. Initially slated for Thilafushi in 2013, subsequent changes redirected the proposed site to Gulhifalhu, where reclamation efforts commenced on a 192-hectare area.

Amidst this backdrop, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, MPL's newly appointed CEO, highlighted the pivotal role of an international port in expanding the company's services. In discussions with PSM News, Ibrahim emphasized ongoing deliberations within the government to kickstart groundwork for this ambitious endeavor.

Citing operational synergy, Ibrahim underscored Thilafushi's existing infrastructure and asserted its suitability for hosting the commercial harbor while envisioning its evolution into an international port. Plans to submit a proposal advocating the relocation of the port project to Thilafushi Island are underway, aligning with MPL's strategic vision.

As discussions gain momentum and the proposal takes shape, the prospect of reinstating Thilafushi as the potential site for the Male' Commercial Harbour relocation holds promise for the port's future and the Maldives' maritime landscape.
