Maldives Requests Withdrawal of Indian Military Personnel Amidst Bilateral Discussions

In a significant turn of events, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has formally requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the archipelago nation, citing a democratic mandate from the Maldivian people. This request was presented during a high-level meeting with India's Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, held at the President's Office.

President Muizzu underscored the democratic will of the Maldivian populace, stating that the people had entrusted him with a strong mandate to request the withdrawal of Indian military personnel. Despite acknowledging the pivotal role played by Indian assets, particularly two helicopters utilized for emergency medical evacuations, the President emphasized the need to honor the expressed desires of the Maldivian citizens.


During the discussions, the leaders also reviewed the progress of several developmental projects in the Maldives supported by India. The Maldivian President emphasized expediting the Greater Male' Connectivity Project (GMCP) while highlighting the importance of addressing any impediments delaying its implementation.


Minister Rijiju expressed a keen desire to cultivate a constructive relationship with the Maldives, acknowledging the vibrant Indian community residing in the country. Both President Dr. Muizzu and Minister Rijiju concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between their respective nations.
