Maldives Embraces Islamic Values on Anniversary of Conversion

The Maldives celebrated the anniversary of its embrace of Islam, an occasion that holds immense cultural and historical significance. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in his address, emphasized the importance of embedding the social and moral values advocated by Islam as a crucial component of the day's commemoration.

On this memorable day, President Solih underscored the significance of individual and collective efforts in promoting the moral and social values that are inherent to Islam. He recognized these values as integral to the identity and culture of the Maldives since the nation's conversion to Islam.


The President's remarks also addressed the pressing humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, a result of Israeli military actions against the residents of the Gaza Strip. In response, President Solih called for a comprehensive international inquiry into the human rights abuses suffered by the Palestinian people. The Maldives stands firmly for global justice and human rights, and this call is a reaffirmation of the nation's commitment to these principles.


Moreover, President Solih emphasized the sacred duty of the entire Islamic Ummah to collectively work towards alleviating the suffering of oppressed Muslims across the globe. He stressed the need for unity and solidarity among Muslim communities as essential components of a successful effort. Bridging divisions and fostering a sense of collective responsibility as a single Ummah is vital in addressing the challenges faced by Muslim communities worldwide.


President Solih also highlighted the enduring faith that has been a foundation for the Maldivian people to unite and build their nation since embracing Islam. He underscored the importance of instilling Islamic principles and nationalistic values in younger generations, as these values promote peace and harmony among the people, in alignment with the tenets of Islam.


The Maldives annually marks the day it embraced Islam on the 2nd of Rabiʽ al-Akhir, following the Islamic calendar. This occasion serves as a reminder of the nation's rich cultural and religious heritage, emphasizing the ongoing importance of Islamic values in shaping the Maldivian identity and fostering unity, peace, and a commitment to justice.
